LEGO mosaic size guide
Updated October 31, 2026
A LEGO mosaic is a grid of 1 × 1 plates or tiles on baseplates. Every stud is 8 mm, so size, plate count and piece count all follow from the number of studs.

Which size for a portrait
At 32 × 32, a face is recognisable from across the room but loses detail up close. 48 × 48 is the sweet spot for most portraits and pets, and it matches the 48-stud panels used by many LEGO Art sets. 64 studs and up suit landscapes or group photos.
Faces with strong light from one side and a plain background read best at small sizes.
Colors are the real limit
LEGO makes fewer colors than thread or bead brands, and not every color exists as a 1 × 1 piece. Patterns here use 40 common colors. Light blues and some skin tones have no exact match, so expect the nearest available color. Use 10 to 14 colors for most photos.
Ordering pieces
- Use the parts list in the PDF: it counts every 1 × 1 piece by color, plus about 3% spare.
- Round 1 × 1 plates give a dotted, classic mosaic look. Flat 1 × 1 tiles look smoother and more like a photo.
- Build plate by plate. The chart marks every 16 × 16 plate with a red outline.
Make yours now
Turn a portrait or a pet photo into a brick mosaic. The chart is split into 16 × 16 plates, and the parts list tells you how many 1 × 1 pieces of each color to order.
